Happy has always seemed to me to be the wrong word to adjoin to this holiday.
How about somber? A somber Memorial Day to you.

Like you, happy seems inappropriate for a day we remember the war dead. It's not never a holiday for me even people tend to turn it into one.
I have been having the same exact thoughts.
